Given that America is celebrating Independence Day tomorrow, we thought we’d dedicate today’s insider advice about taking a Williamsburg, Virginia golf vacation.
First off, Williamsburg’s merit as a Colonial America living history museum is unquestioned. But those who might like to ride in a golf cart in addition to the horse-drawn variety may wonder what the area has to offer. The answer is plenty, both in the heart of Williamsburg and the surrounding area.
The bigger question concerns where to stay. With two major resorts &mdash the Colonial Village’s Williamsburg Inn and Williamsburg Lodge, and the Kingsmill Resort &mdash how do you know which resort is right for you?
We recently returned from a Williamsburg, Virginia golf vacation and here’s our take on it: the Colonial Village will have particular appeal to history buffs and its marvelously updated Williamsburg Inn, just off the main colonial parade, is best suited to those seeking premier accommodations. Theme-park lovers and those seeking a somewhat less formal environment will prefer Kingsmill Resort, as will larger groups seeking a purer golf experience.
Here’s the best news. Since the Colonial Village’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (with 45 holes by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and Rees Jones) and Kingsmill Resort (54 championship holes and a nine-hole pitch-and-putt) welcome public play for the most part, it’s easy to divide your Williamsburg, Virginia golf vacation between the two hubs. Heck, they’re only three miles apart.
On our visit, we stayed two nights in the Colonial Village, two nights at Kingsmill Resort, played the full lineup of their golf courses, and allotted time for a round at an off-resort, daily-fee course that ranks in the top-100 in the country.

Also, if in the area, try out King Carter in Irvington. Best course of the year in 2006 under 75.00. Goes for 40 during the week and that includes balls and a cart.
While Kingsmill Resort and Golden Horseshoe are by far Williamsburg’s “big two”, the city offers a lot more in terms of both golf courses and lodging especially for those that aren’t looking to spend an arm and a leg at either resort. Williamsburg offers a total of 15 championship courses such as Royal New Kent, Stonehouse, Fords Colony, and favorite Colonial Heritage which in my opinion is the best bang for your buck in Williamsburg. There is a lot of quality golf in Williamsburg and I recommend it to any golf enthusiast who is willing to travel.
