The Players Stadium Course is back to its bold self.
After a nearly nine-month layoff, you can once again include the famed TPC Sawgrass in your Florida golf vacation plans.
The crown jewel of the PGA Tour’s golf course network, the newly named Players Stadium Course (formerly the Stadium Course) at TPC Sawgrass reopened this week following closure for extensive renovations.
No, they didn’t muck around with the 17th hole, the epic island-green par three that provides much of the drama during the Players Championship, nor any of the other great holes, at least not in a visible way.
Most of the changes addressed course conditions — a transition from ultra-lush (and sometimes soggy) to what the Tour is calling “firm, fast and fair” — and took place underground, with the installation of a new irrigation system and high-tech vacuums beneath the greens.
Everything that wobbles the knees — visual intimidation with water on almost ever hole, large and small bunkers, tall grassy mounds and hard-to-read greens — remains. In fact, the only major difference to this facility, besides the doubling in size of the clubhouse, is when you can schedule your visit.
The tournament has moved from March to May, giving you a wider window of opportunity to make this Pete Dye masterpiece a part of your Florida golf vacation. Two round, two-night packages (at the Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa) start at $495, including taxes.
