Make this card your business if you
You probably don’t think of Hawaii golf courses when you’re looking for discount golf vacations, but deals do exist. There are, of course, the everyday and deeply reduced kama’aina (pronounced, “ka-muh-EYE-nah) rates, but you had better be able to prove that you’re a local if you ask for them.
Aside from that, some of the best deals we’ve found are available through the Golf Hawaii Card (hawaiigolfdeals.com).
The Golf Hawaii Card works like other golf passes you may have seen, except for three big differences:
- It actually provides big-time green-fee savings at the Hawaii golf courses it works with and each round includes cart rental and same-day, same-course replays when available
- It doesn’t wind up burning you with all sorts of blackout times and other maddening restrictions
- Tee times can be made up to 90 days in advance — with some golf passes, you’re lucky if it’s two days
In addition to discounted green fees, the folks at the Golf Hawaii Card have worked out additional perks at certain Hawaii golf courses, such as unlimited range balls and pro shop discounts.
The card starts at $29.95 for Hawaii golf courses on Maui and Oahu, but we recommend the $59.95 version because it also gets you discounted access to Hawaii golf courses on the Big Island, where the layouts and savings are much better.
Take for example, the two golf courses at the Waikoloa Beach Resort. The non-guest green fee to play one course is $195. With the Golf Hawaii Card, you can play both courses, on two different days, at any time, for $180. At Mauna Kea Resort’s Hapuna Golf Course, the non-guest green fee before 11am is $165. With the Golf Hawaii Card, it’s $80.
If that doesn’t provide the makings for discount golf vacations, we don’t know what does. Heck, these numbers make a strong case for the card even if you’re playing only one round on the participating Hawaii golf courses (a list of which is available at hawaiigolfdeals.com). Just remember that each player must have their own card to get the discounted rates and that each year’s card is only valid until January 31 of the following year (buy it in April 2008 and it’s good until January 31, 2009, for example).
Two other things we like about the Golf Hawaii Card people: 1) they also offer full, Hawaii golf vacation packages (some including airfare!), and 2) their rate sheet tells you where to find good deals at some Hawaii golf courses that don’t even require their card. Now that’s the true “Spirit of Aloha.”
