Notes on Bully Pulpit Golf Course:
A minimalist, Michael Hurdzan design, Bully Pulpit begins at the low-lying banks of the Little Missouri River, moves to open meadows and prairie, and then climbs for a climactic run through the dramatic and forbidding badlands. The course doesn’t really turn “bully” until the back nine. The stretch from 14 to 17 is known in wholesome Medora parlance as “Oh my goodness corner.” These vertigo-inducing holes channel through gaps in the broken badlands terrain.

Insider tips at Bully Pulpit Golf Course:
The first slot on the tee sheet at Bully Pulpit in summer is 6 am. If you begin around then, you’ll likely enjoy the exhilaration of having the course to yourself. For sheer beauty, however, nothing beats a replay round late in the day when the light and shadows lend magical coloring to the badlands. Whatever time you choose to play, purchase a course guide ($10) and read it carefully, because Hurdzan gives more than a few clues on how to play the holes.

Notes on Visiting Medora:
In Medora, the south entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers a 36-mile driving loop plus hiking and horseback riding trails that showcase the spectacular badlands buttes and spires and the occasional buffalo herd. Medora itself is rich in museums, reverence for Theodore Roosevelt, and tourist shops. It’s a slice of Americana. Every night hundreds of tourists head to the pitchfork fondue dinner and the 8:30 pm performance of the Western/North Dakota-themed Medora Musical in an outdoor ampitheater.
