Pick an odd day to play this terrific tour venue.

This week, the upper-echelon players from golf’s global tours are competing in the Accenture Match Play Championship on the South Course at the Gallery Golf Club in Tucson
, Arizona (the rest of the PGA Tour, concurrently, is in Mexico for the first time ever).

Although the club is private, you can play this John Fought-designed golf course on your Arizona golf vacation
…if you schedule your tee time for an odd-numbered day. That’s because it, and the original, North Course, alternate between public and private play.

The South Course is quite different from the North, and, if you watch the tournament on TV (Golf Channel through Friday; Golf Channel and NBC Saturday and Sunday), you’ll see long, wide driving lanes and, hopefully, the severe slopes and undulations of its massive greens, which will likely dictate who advances. Also, keep an eye out for holes No.7 and No. 12, short par fours that are drive-able for some of these guys.

After our recent visit, we actually thought the North Course (designed by Fought and Tom Lehman) was the slightly better layout because the routing incorporates noticeable elevation changes while winding through the foothills of the Tortolita Mountains. But, if playing where the pros play is what you want to do on your Arizona golf vacation, the South Course will certainly not disappoint.
