The Best Course to Play on New Orleans Golf Vacations

New Orleans golf vacations must include a round at TPC Louisiana, a Pete Dye design.

With so many other big draws — music, food, architecture…your industry’s trade show/convention —  I’ll concede that you’re probably not going to take a New Orleans golf vacation so much as you might play a round or two while you’re on vacation (or a business trip) in New Orleans.

So, the obvious question is, if you’re only going to play once or twice, which are the best New Orleans golf courses to play?

Well, included in your options are a golf course that currently hosts the PGA Tour’s annual stop in The Big Easy and a private layout that previously hosted it. Here’s the one that the experts at Golf Odyssey recommend.

“The best and most enjoyable place to play in New Orleans is the TPC Louisiana ($110-$169),” wrote Golf Odyssey‘s editors in the October 2009 issue. “Located in a suburb 25 minutes from the French Quarter and surrounded by a preserve, this attractive Pete Dye design provides a peaceful and strategic game. Dye’s routing offers numerous memorable holes, including the four finishing holes, which annually rate among the toughest closing stretches on the PGA Tour. And, as one would expect at a TPC/PGA Tour venue, the practice facilities are outstanding.”

Granted, it’s less expensive to play English Turn, the New Orleans golf course that previously hosted the PGA Tour event here, and it comes with the additional perk of being a private course (it allows some public play) but Golf Odyssey‘s editors advise resisting these temptations.

I can’t divulge the reason here, but their full, unbiased report on taking New Orleans golf vacations — er, New Orleans vacations that include golf — explains everything and includes a lot more handy advice, including hotel and restaurant recommendations, the best times of year to visit, and the off-course sights and sounds you shouldn’t miss.

I’ve been here once before and I will definitely come back. This course was the icing on the cake on my New Orleans vacation.
