Good from afar: Blue Tip is the new Grand Cayman golf course at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman.

While it’s known as a world-class scuba destination, the island of Grand Cayman has a long way to go before being considered a top spot for Caribbean golf vacations. That’s not to say that taking a Grand Cayman golf vacation is a bad idea, but it’s probably better suited to a long weekend or quick, mid-week getaway where golf is not the highest priority.

Yes, there was a lot of fanfare surrounding last year’s opening of Blue Tip, a Greg Norman design, but we found this private, nine-holer for Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman guests to be uninspiring.

The course was built on relatively flat terrain and, though water is prevalent because the routing weaves through a series of man-made canals, there aren’t any holes on the ocean. Isn’t that one of the reasons people take Caribbean golf vacations? For the $218 we paid for two, nine-hole loops, we certainly expected to see, or at least hear, the crashing waves.  Read more →
