Private Golf Courses Playable Via State Associations

Like other state golf associations, the Northern California Golf Association provides access (and discounts) to top public and private golf courses.

Like other state golf associations, the Northern California Golf Association provides access (and discounts) to top public and private golf courses.

There’s a good article in the current (August 2009) issue of Golf Digest explaining how joining a state golf association can get you access to certain private golf courses and high-end daily-fee layouts.

Of course, that’s not news to regular readers of this blog, but the article does a nice job of providing additional concrete examples of what various state golf associations offer in the way of access to high-end public and private golf courses.

I was very surprised, however, that when discussing the benefits of joining the Northern California Golf Association (, Golf Digest’s editors mentioned access to the Timilick Club, Del Paso CC, and Ruby Hill GC…but left out Poppy Ridge GC and what is perhaps the best known course of the lot: Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, which, until recently, helped host the PGA Tour event there each year.

Also absent is what I think is one of the best NCGA member benefits of all: periodic discounts at the world famous Pebble Beach golf courses (Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill, and Spanish Bay). For example, see my previous tip on How to Play Pebble Beach Golf Courses for 30-50 Percent Discounts; No Hotel Stays Required.

The article did include the following important point that we’ve mentioned before: you can sometimes join a state’s golf association (or simply purchase access to member benefits) even if you don’t live there. The NCGA and the Virginia State Golf Association are two examples.

If you know of others with particularly good access to private golf courses or top public layouts, feel free to leave a comment below.

Good call on the NGCA membership for Pebble Beach Resorts. Just got back from there and I got a $100 discount off of Spyglass Hill for being an SCGA member (Southern California). Also, you get crazy discounts for replay as well. Played Del Monte for $40 in the afternoon!
