Spirit will begin new, non-stop flights from Chicago for Myrtle Beach golf vacations on its Airbus A319s.
Given the small airport there, it’s not always easy to fly non-stop when taking Myrtle Beach golf vacations, and based on the unreliable nature of air travel today, we always recommend the fewest number of stops possible.
That’s why we were very interested to learn that there are plans for new, non-stop flights to Myrtle Beach from another major market: Chicago, Ill., via O’Hare International Airport (symbol: ORD) and Spirit Airlines.
Service is scheduled to being on March 1, 2009 (just in time for prime, springtime Myrtle Beach golf vacations) with one early afternoon flight per day to (and from) Myrtle Beach International Airport (symbol: MYR) aboard Spirit’s fleet of 145-passenger, Airbus A319s, a seating chart of which can be found here.
I know this is only relevant to a portion of you, so I thought I’d also investigate what other cities and airlines currently offer the same, non-stop service for Myrtle Beach golf vacations.
Here’s the list. You can fly non-stop to Myrtle Beach from the following cities (and on the following airlines):
- Atlanta, Georgia (ASA/Comair/Delta)
- Atlantic City, NJ (Spirit)
- Allentown, Pa (Direct Air)
- Boston, Massachusetts (US Airways, Spirit)
- Charlotte, North Carolina (US Airways)
- Chicago, Illinois (Spirit, as of March 1, 2009)
- Columbus Ohio (Direct Air)
- Detroit, Michigan (Northwest, Spirit)
- Fort Lauderdale, Florida (Spirit)
- Kalamazoo, Michigan (Direct Air)
- Newark, New Jersey (Continental, Direct Air)
- New York City – LaGuardia (Spirit)
- Niagara Falls, New York (Direct Air)
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (US Airways)
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Direct Air)
- Plattsburg, New York (Direct Air)
- Punta Gorda, Florida (Direct Air)
- Rockford, Illinois (Direct Air)
- Toledo, Ohio (Direct Air)
- Washington D.C. Dulles (United Express)
- Worchester, Massachusetts (Direct Air)
Still nothing farther west than Illinois, but we’ll let you know if and when that changes.

Quick update. I am heading to Myrtle Beach in late February and I am taking a direct flight out of Detroit via Northwest Airlines. There is also a second company that has direct flights from airports such as Niagara Falls, NY. and various other locations throughout the U.S.Unfortunately I do not remember their name and they only perform flights direct to Myrtle Beach. The readers should have this information as well, the only drawback is that your plans need to be flexible as the flights seem to depart midweek only. Thought you should know.
Thanks, Randy. I think you may be referring to DirectAir, which is mentioned above.
do you have anythingat the catskills NY or the Delaware water gap PA. since your in NJ how about Atlantic City NJ anything resorts there ?
Yes, we know the Catskills and Atlantic City quite well. If you can give us some specifics about what you’re looking for, we can likely provide some advice on where to play and stay. However, as part of our committment to honest, unbiased advice, we don’t book or arrange travel.
direct air’s service between plattsburgh, ny and myrtle beach has become pretty popular, especially with residents of southern quebec (not far from plattsburgh). it’s just a 2 hour flight from there to MYR, so you might be able to fly and play on the same day. also, last i knew, there were no car parking charges in plattsburgh. only negative is that when you return to plattsburgh, you might have to dig your car out of the snow so leave a shovel and windshield sweeper in the car. that’s small price to pay for a mid-winter vacation.
here’s another frugal vacation idea. book a golf trip in lake placid, ny from opening day to mid june (that’s around may 1 – june 20 or so). the stay and play deals are basically giveaways. the 63 holes in the village are uncrowded. the only slight drawback is the effect of winter on the courses. there’s usually some snow mold on these layouts early in the season. but they are very playable, offer great scenery of the adirondack mountains, excellent restaurants and pubs, and thriving nightlife. check out lakeplacidgolf.com.
