The gnocchi at Michael Anthony's is legendary.
As the PGA Tour moves 150 miles southeast from Augusta, Georgia to Hilton Head, South Carolina this week, you can bet that some of its famous faces will be showing up at the island’s better dining establishments. And, if you’re looking for a great meal on your Hilton Head golf vacation, you might want to put your face in these places, too.
One of Hilton Head’s best restaurants is also one of its newest. The Sage Room, located at the back of Heritage Plaza (much of Hilton Head is composed of strip mall-type plazas), features an exhibition kithcen in a casually upscale dining room. The eclectic menu draws on influences from all over the globe. Take a seat at the bar and watch the chefs prepare your appetizers and entrees to order. The seafood is wonderful, especially the almond-crusted tuna steak.
For a romantic meal, it is hard to top the Old Fort Pub. Tucked among tall oaks on the intracoastal waterway, the restaurant turns sunset into an event for diners sitting outside on the porch or looking out from the picutre windows. Like the Sage Room, the American fare draws on influences from all over the world.
Michael Anthony’s, located in Orleans Plaza, is one of the island’s newer Italian restaurants. The gnocchi is outstanding and is not to be missed. Oliver’s, right next door, has a short but carefully selected, mostly French menu with notable local seafood (small portions are available for all entrees) and a fine wine list. Upon finishing his nightly cooking duties, chef/owner Oliver Allain entertains diners by playing the classical guitar.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of the better restaurants to try on a Hilton Head golf vacation, but it is a good place to start. And, if you politely ask your hosts about other places that they’d recommend, you’ll likely discover other local favorites.
