The Best Course to Play on Your Mexico Golf Vacation

El Tam: From the jungle to the ocean's edge.

El Tam: From the jungle to the ocean's edge.

The best course to play on your Mexico golf vacation just might be El Tamarindo.

Carved by hand out of the remote jungle on a stretch of Mexico’s Pacific coastline, El Tamarindo is the type of hidden course golf trophy hunters dream about playing.

El Tamarindo sits in Mexican billionaire Roberto Hernandez’s 2,040-acre ecological preserve on the beautiful Costa Alegre, between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo.

At this par-72, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and David Fleming-designed golf course, tee times are unnecessary; on the busiest day, no more than 30-40 people play; not that you’ll see any of them. The course winds in and out of a jungle of blossoming tree canopies, emerging only to touch the ocean on six holes.

The front nine is truly spectacular; it tests all aspects of your game and has a wonderful rhythm as it rises and falls through the jungle on its way to the sea. The back nine, while not as strong, doesn’t disappoint either.

If your goal is to “get away from everything” except fantastic golf, El Tamarindo is the place to play on your Mexico golf vacation.

Dear Golf Insiders: My wife and I just returned from our week in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The weather was still hot and humid, as we expected and as your previous Insider newsletter had stated. I played Cabo del Sol, Palmilla and the course closest to where we stayed (Pueblo Bonito Sunset), but that is really a wastewater treatment plant. Palmilla was by far the best course I can recall! Thanks, Bill Gorman
