Playa Azul

Anyone who has ever taken a Mexico golf vacation has undoubtedly come down with a case of sticker shock over the often exorbitant green fees found at many of the resorts throughout the country. However, if you want to bag the best bargain on your next Mexico golf vacation, our advice is head to the island of Cozumel and the charming Playa Azul resort.

This boutique resort is a departure from the larger, all-inclusive hotels on the island. Playa Azul, which is not otherwise an all-inclusive property (a big buffet breakfast is included, however), stakes its claim as one of the best for discount golf vacations because it is the only hotel in Cozumel that offers unlimited free golf with every room.

All you’ll have to pay for at its affiliated and nearby Cozumel Country Club is your golf cart, which runs about $25.

Although the price is cheap, Golf Odyssey’s editors found this 6,754-yard, par-72 course, created by the Nicklaus Design team, to be a worthy track to play on a Mexico golf vacation. Water comes into play on all but four holes and environmental considerations require frequent, heart-pounding carries over hazards. Teeming wildlife often spills onto the course from the ubiquitous jungle and mangrove swamps that line the (thankfully) generous fairways. We were also impressed by the smoothness of the greens, something that was lacking on previous discount golf vacations.

After the round, you can hit the beach, relax on your sea-facing balcony, go scuba diving/snorkeling, or get a massage, all available at the hotel. Intimacy and convenience are the rule at Playa Azul, which is just a five minute cab ride (about $5) to the golf course or into town.

Best of all, depending on when you go, your room rate with unlimited golf may cost less than what non-hotel guests pay for a single round of golf at Cozumel Country Club, often upwards of $150. Now that’s what we call a good reason to take a Mexico golf vacation.
