Cabo San Lucas Golf Vacations

mexico_loscabosYour choices of non-golf activities on your Mexico golf vacation are many and varied.

Sport fishing at Los Cabos, Mexico is among the best anywhere, with more than 800 species of fish in the Sea of Cortez. And because the ocean floor drops off steeply close to shore, you need not venture far to catch magnificent sailfish, swordfish, marlin and tuna on your Mexico golf vacation.

Likewise, the waters of Los Cabos are a diver’s paradise, filled with large schools of many species of aquatic life, including hammerhead sharks and giant sea turtles.

Las Ventanas in Los Cabos offers tennis, horseback riding, and exploration of the desert by jeep.

Each hotel offers a slightly different selection of non-golf choices for your Mexico golf vacation. In addition to an excellent fleet of fishing boats and parangas at the Hotel Palmilla in Los Cabos, you’ll find a dive shop for scuba and snorkeling, tennis courts, paddle ball courts, shuffleboard, croquet, volleyball, and a beautiful gym overlooking the beach.

Most resort hotels in Los Cabos offer windsurfing, parasailing, sea kayaking, whale watching, and cruises to supplement your Mexico golf vacation.

The Ocean Course's 17th green and 18th hole.

The philosophy behind Jack Nicklaus’s 7,037-yard, par-72 Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol is that golf ought to be fun, not penal, on your Cabo San Lucas, Mexico golf vacation.

Nicklaus has called the rugged terrain of Los Cabos’ Cabo del Sol “the best piece of golf property I’ve ever seen” and created — at 16, 17 and 18 — what he immodestly calls, “the three finest finishing holes in all of golf.” And indeed, they suffer little, if at all, in frequent comparisons to Pebble Beach.

The 16th hole is a long, 429-yard, left-turning dogleg par-4 that is mitigated only by its downhill slope toward the sea.

Seventeen is a 178-yard par three across a boiling, rocky bar to a classic, pulpit green. Depending on the wind, big hitters may select anything from a five iron to a sand wedge here.

The 18th tee is directly behind a massive boulder from the 17th, and you will stand in awe. From the back tees, the drive on this 425-yard, par-four masterpiece requires a carry of about 175 yards across rock and sand to a cliff-hugging fairway with appropriate risk-reward characteristics.

From the fairway, the green teeters below you on the edge of golf ball oblivion. A low, sure-handed, bump-and-run approach will appeal to most golfers here. Par is a triumph to be celebrated on the pleasant clubhouse patio.

The 16th, 17th and 18th at the Ocean Course, Cabo del Sol, may be the best finishing holes you will play on your Cabo San Lucas, Mexico golf vacation — or anywhere else.
