If youve never visited St. Andrews on a Scotland golf vacation, you might not know that there is more than one course at The Home of Golf. The famous Old Course, in fact, is just one of six, and soon to be seven.
The latest addition is a David McLay Kidd design currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2008. Kidd, as you may know, is the prodigy who designed the first course at Bandon Dunes.
If you want to be one of the first people to play this lovely new links and win an invitation to attend the opening ceremonies, all you have to do is come up with the name that is ultimately chosen for the layout. The St. Andrews Links Trust, which presides over the courses, is welcoming submissions emailed to namecomp@standrews.org.uk until December 1, 2006.
Here are a couple of hints to increase the chances of your name being chosen:
1. The current course names either refer to their location or unique circumstances. For example, the Eden Course is bordered by Eden Estuary. The Jubilee course opened on a celebratory holiday in Great Britain.
2. St. Andrews locals like short, punchy names for their courses or the ability to shorten them. So, the Strathtyrum Course is called The Strath. Jubilee is called the Jube.
3. Perhaps the weirdest one is that, according to the Links Trusts website, all the initial letters of St. Andrews Links courses spell out the name B. Jones, Mr. R. T. Jones or Bobby Jones. All that is missing is a course beginning with the letter T.
