Myrtle Beach Restaurants: The Best 1-2 Combo on a Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation

By Craig Better |

Chef Louis Osteen's Myrtle Beach
restaurants will leave you smiling on
your Myrtle Beach golf vacation.

Whenever I take a Myrtle Beach golf vacation, I make sure to get down to Pawleys Island, which not only has some of my favorite courses along the Grand Strand (Caledonia, True Blue, the Heritage Club) but also some of my favorite Myrtle Beach restaurants.

The best one-two dining combination I've found is at Louis's at Pawleys (louisatpawleys.com) and the adjoining Fish Camp Bar, located on Highway 17 in the Hammock Shops specialty shopping/dining village.

Both feature the Lowcountry cooking of chef/owner Louis Osteen, one of the leaders of New Southern cuisine and named best chef in the Southeast in 2004 by the James Beard Foundation.

Osteen put himself on the map with restaurants in Charleston, but I'm glad he came back to Pawleys Island, where, in 1980, he began his efforts to popularize the indigenous food of the region. The rudiments of the Lowcountry — shrimp, crab, sausage, rice, yams, corn, and okra — are Osteen's essential ingredients, and though his menus are simple, the flavors of his dishes are complex and captivating.

For a casual experience on your Myrtle Beach golf vacation, I recommend the Fish Camp Bar; Louis's at Pawleys is more intimate, given that its dining rooms are in a private home with wood and timber accents from area plantations.

Both Myrtle Beach restaurants are open seven days a week from 11 am until 10 pm, and though they have separate evening fare, anyone in the Fish Camp Bar can order from Louis's menu.

If you plan to play golf in Pawleys Island on your Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation, my advice is not to leave the area until you've experienced at least one of these two great Myrtle Beach restaurants.

Just returned from our annual trip. Another excellent choice -- not well known except to locals -- is Collectors Cafe on business 17 and 76th street. The food is somewhat eclectic Mediterranean, nice wine list, and the restaurant has original artwork on the walls for sale. Definitely local flavor and great food.

Louis's has slipped in recent months, ever since he opened a restaurant in Las Vegas. He has spent too much time away from the mother ship, and it has shown in the slippage in quality (you can taste the change especially in the famed shrimp and grits). As a part-time resident of Pawleys Island, here's my suggestions. not necessarily in order of preference: The Rice Paddy in Georgetown (six miles from Pawleys), Frank's and Frank's Outback, Austin's, Oroboso's (although closed temporarily), Pastaria 811 (Litchfield Beach, surprisingly good Italian food), and Bistro 217. Oh, and for lunch, Caledonia Golf and Fish Club has excellent food and great views. Larry Gavrich, http://www.GolfCommunityReviews.com
