Heron Glen is one of the rare New Jersey golf courses that can compose quality, discount golf vacations.

Any thoughts on above average, budget, northern New Jersey golf courses for a June trip? We'll be based in Secaucus, and we'd love to avoid big crowds so it's no problem if we have to drive a bit.
Wow, you're looking for the trifecta? A quality, crowdless, and discount golf vacation among jam-packed northern New Jersey golf courses? Brother, that's not going to be easy, especially in June.
Not sure if you've seen it, but Golf Digest published a "Metro Golf Ranking" that looked at 330 metro areas in the USA according to: access to golf, value of golf, and quality of golf. Counties in Northern New Jersey ranked close to dead last. It's not something I'm proud of; I live there!
That being said, you can craft a (relatively speaking) discount golf vacation, especially if you are willing to drive up to an hour. Several county-owned New Jersey golf courses have sprung up over the last few years, and they often provide the best combination of public access, quality, and price. Obviously, weekdays will be much less crowded than on weekends.
Some good ones to consider (and their 18-hole, weekday/weekend non-resident green fees, including cart) are:
- Neshanic Valley GC in Neshanic Station ($65/$80)
- Berkshire Valley GC in Oak Ridge ($65/$80)
- High Bridge Hills GC in High Bridge ($60/$78)
- Heron Glen GC in Ringoes ($57/$71)
- Hyatt Hills Golf Complex in Clark (nine holes; $50/$100 for 18 holes)
Mattawang Golf Club in Belle Mead ($51/$69) isn't a county course, but a great value just the same. Jack Nicklaus still holds the course record at this former private club. Of course, you didn't hear this from me; my Saturday foursome would kill me for giving away, "our little secret."
