The Best Golf Apps for iPhone and Android

In addition to questions about courses and travel, a lot of people have been asking me which golf apps I like.

One of my favorites is a lesser-known one called iSandbagger ($3).

As its name suggests, it provides insight into the legitimacy of people's handicaps.

Find yourself getting "pencil whipped" in a match that should be a lot closer?

With iSandbagger, you can see each player's statistical probability of shooting various scores on a specific golf course.

And if someone ultimately cards a score equal to or below their course handicap, it'll tell you the odds of this happening.

For example, there's only a 1 in 570 chance that someone will beat their handicap by five strokes.

(What we really need, of course, is an app for confronting someone about it.)

Another great app is the V1 swing analysis tool, which, for $5, all but replaces those thousand-dollar video analysis stations you see teaching pros using.

You simply shoot a video of your swing with your phone or tablet, then the software lets you draw lines on top of it marking your posture, swing plane, etc.

You can then watch your swing in slow motion and compare it to the "ideal." Very helpful if you're visual learner like me.

What do you think are the best golf apps?

I recently installed Pocket Caddy for my iPhone and it has really improved my game. It is very easy to use and automatically calculates where you should aim based on wind speed/direction and changes in elevation. It is really amazingly accurate. I think it is well worth the price and strongly recommend Pocket Caddy.

Without a doubt, Golfshot GPS is the best GPS app out. Yes, it's $29.95 one time but it's worth it. You can switch back and forth from aerial view or GPS yardage—great for when your playing a course the first time. There's no additional cost to download aerials and it there's a course you play that's not available, send an e-mail and they will add it. Other features include scoring, shot distance tracking, shot stats such as club selection, fairways hit, # of putts, etc. You can e-mail yourself your card when you're done, which includes shot stats. If you want, it even asks if you want to take a group picture of your foursome when you're done. GREAT app!!!

Who's Your Caddy is the best iPhone GPS and scorekeeper around. It's accurate, gives statistics based on your scorecard entries and even gives tips on every aspect of the game. And it's free. Customer support is prompt and thorough. I needed updated course info and it was handled within a day. I think they now have a Android version too.

For Iphones - The PGA Tour has a great app along with Golfweek and Golf Channel. For golf GPS I like Golfshot but it costs a one time fee of about $30. the USGA has a really good app for the rules of golf. Very handy for those rules arguments that tend to come up.

Does not work well with blackberry. But keep up the good work. I like what you guys do.

I like an app called BreakMeter. It uses the accelerometer in your iphone to show the actual break/slope on a green. I have found it useful especially during practice rounds before a tournament (obviously not for tournament use).
I was a marshal at the US Open a couple weeks ago and saw the USGA guys using similar devices to look at slopes on the greens as a part of their daily process of deciding hole locations.
Try it out.

the sky droid app is great as a inexpensive GPS. Its as accurate as the GPS device is in your phone. uses google maps for visuals and user pre-inserted points for measurements. not bad for less than $5. In my experience it was as accurate as Sky Caddie, upro and the rest.
Also, the Masters and US Open apps are great too. Gives you live access to the bonus coverage that is only available otherwise on Directv.

I like the iSwing app. Similar to the V1 mentioned above. You can record yourself from the side or 'down the line,' then draw various guidelines. helped me tremendously.
