3 Nights of 5-Star Lodging, and 3 Rounds of Top-100 Golf from €562 per person (approx. $725)

Packages Include:

• Classic Links room at the Lodge at Doonbeg
• Breakfast each morning
• Golf at Doonbeg
• Golf at Lahinch
• Complimentary Taylor Made club rental
• 3 nights, 3 rounds from €562 (about $725)
For access to this special offer, email me:

editor [at] golfvacationinsider.com

You usually don’t stop what you’re doing and book a trip to Ireland, but today’s private offer might warrant it.

That’s because you can play two of the world’s best golf courses (Doonbeg and Lahinch) and stay in one of its best hotels (The Lodge at Doonbeg) in high season for less than you’ll find anywhere else.

Less, in fact, than at Doonbeg’s own website, where this special package is not even listed.

And for good reason.

It’s own Doonbeg/Lahinch package includes only two nights of lodging and one round of golf on each course.

This one gives you three nights and three rounds of golf for only a tad bit more, and it includes complimentary Taylor Made club rentals.

Now, as much as I’d like to make this about price, that’s really just the icing on the cake.

This is really an opportunity to play…

“Some of the World’s Most Striking Examples of Links Golf — Seaside, Sea level, Sand-based, and Routed Through Supremely Natural Duneland.”

That’s how the notoriously hard-to-please editors of Golf Odyssey characterized the golf at Doonbeg and Lahinch, and here’s what else they had to say about…

The Lodge at Doonbeg:

“If you travel to Ireland and long for the luxurious experience you enjoy at the finest American golf hotels, you now have a new option. With its sumptuously decorated accommodations, a fully equipped spa, and location midway between Lahinch and Ballybunion, The Lodge at Doonbeg will undoubtedly draw many
high-end travelers.”

Golf at Doonbeg:

“Doonbeg’s grass-cloaked dunes rise 75 feet above the sea and are every bit as imposing as those at Ballybunion, Royal County Down, and Enniscrone…for every shot played through the air, another must be played – with flair, feel, and finesse – over the rumpled ground. Fairways meander along tranquil valleys,
greens perch defiantly upon the flanks of dunes or beckon from cloistered dells or rest with perfect naturalness mere steps above the beach…The outbound nine is studded with brilliant holes. Is the incoming nine as involving? Yes, indeed.”

Golf at Lahinch:

“Lahinch has it all: a dreamscape of rough and tumble duneland, exhilarating views over Liscannor Bay, and a succession of varied and compelling holes that test players of the highest rank (Phil Mickleson once called it his favorite links course) and yet gladden the heart of the 16-handicapper.”

Other Accolades:

Doonbeg:

Other Great Courses to Play

For those interested in playing more golf, the Lodge at Doonbeg happens to provide a very convenient base from which to play, among others, Ballybunion and Tralee.

On Ballybunion, Golf Odyssey’s editors wrote:

“This is mighty and thrilling stuff, pulse quickening, the pressure on the swing intense. Ballybunion may well possess more great holes than any other eighteen in the Irish landmass. It is unsurpassed for pure golfing pleasure, a remarkable balance of honest challenge, naturalness, aesthetic beauty, variety, originality, and sheer exhilaration.”

And on Tralee:

“The first nine can fairly be viewed as a warmup for the rollicking second half, one of Ireland’s truly great seaside nines. The ups and downs are startling. So are the massive dunes. Drives must often carry violently broken ground in order to reach constricted fairways. Shots to the green are sometimes imperiled by treacherous falloffs that end not simply in hollows but in veritable abysses. This is golf as high adventure.”

When to Go

If you’re interesting in taking advantage of this private sale, the sooner you make your arrangements, the better.

We’re approaching the heart of “high season” in Ireland, which, frankly, makes the special pricing on this offer that much more attractive.

By the way, non-golfers can have fun staying at Doonbeg, too, as it offers a wide variety of outdoor activites including surfing, horseback riding, fishing, cycling, dolphin watching, hiking, and rock climbing.

The Unadvertised Offer for GVI Readers Only

Just to review, this packages includes:Just to review, this packages includes:

New golf course construction in North America has slowed to a trickle, but the renovation business is booming.

In fact, some of the best-known courses and resorts have recently undergone major changes.

Here are some I thought you might want to know about before the summer travel season:

The American Club (Kohler, Wisconsin)
Rooms that have been transformed from dated to dapper prompted the notoriously demanding editors of Golf Odyssey to wonder whether The American Club is now America’s best overall golf resort (golf, lodging, dining, off-course activities). And this was before they saw the just-unveiled changes to the 55-room Carriage House (located above the spa). Last year, the resort also unveiled a new, cool lodging option: Sandhill, a two-bedroom woodland cabin with an accompanying “shed” with a sauna and card playing area.

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon, Oregon)
In late March, the resort fully reopened Bandon Trails after completing major renovations and minor tweaks on a total of eight holes. This was the first time all 18 holes were open for play since November 2012. In addition to the on-course changes, the off-course experience was improved, too: the Trails End grill’s outside patio was expanded with more seating to accommodate those playing Bandon Preserve, the 13-hole, par-three course.

Highlands Links (Nova Scotia, Canada)
Before Cabot Links, the “must play” on Cape Breton Island was Highlands Links, a 1941 Stanley Thompson design still considered one of the five best courses in Canada and one of the top-100 in the world (and it’s a muni). Over the last two years, the course has been busy repairing flood damage and restoring greens and bunkers back to Thompson’s original sizes and shapes.

La Costa Resort & Spa (Carlsbad, California)
The design firm of Damian Pascuzzo and Steve Pate, along with consulting architect Jeff Brauer, refashioned La Costa’s North Course into the Champions Course. It now has a more naturalistic, environmentally sensitive look, raised fairways, new risk/reward elements, and, equally important, a new drainage system to address what used to be nicknamed, “Lake La Costa.” Later this year, the resort plans to complete its golf upgrade by shutting down the South Course for a similar transformation.

PGA National Resort & Spa (Palm Beach Gardens, Florida)
A massive revitalization that began five years ago continues with the reworking of the resort’s original, Haig Course by George and Tom Fazio. Now called The Fazio, the course follows the former routing plan, but architect Tom Fazio II regrassed and enlarged the greens by 70 percent, installed a new irrigation system, reshaped the tee boxes from round to square, added new bunkers, and lengthened the course to more than 7,000 yards. In a nod to the PGA’s “Tee it Forward” initiative, the younger Fazio also installed a new set of forward tees at 5,100 yards.

Coeur d’Alene Resort (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho)
No major changes to the golf course (why mess with a good thing?), but the lakefront resort has just come off a multimillion dollar renovation giving it more elegant public spaces, expanded and enhanced meeting spaces, new restaurants, a completely redesigned cocktail lounge, an expanded fitness center, and a pleasing (and much needed) facelift to the oldest guestrooms. The lobby — now with Italian tile floors, a 32-foot-long Koi aquarium, Brazilian granite countertops and contemporary art — is particularly appealing, as is the concierge-style check-in.

These are by no means North America’s only big-time renovation projects — there are too many to list and more are announced each day (Trump’s project at Doral Resort & Spa, for instance).

Have you been to any recent renovations that impressed you? Disappointed you?

Please share your thoughts or read what others are saying below.

A few months ago, I told you about some of the worst products I saw at the PGA Show.

Now let me tell you about one of the best:

The 3Bays GSA (Golf Swing Analyzer).

I’m sure you’ve been hearing alot about golf swing analyzers, including from me.

There’s a reason: they’re probably the most helpful and affordable game-improvement devices since the cavity-back iron.

You simply attach them to your club and swing…

…and you can immediately see that swing in incredible detail — your plane, path, speed, tempo, face angle, etc. — on your smartphone or tablet.

In other words, you can see exactly what you’re doing (vs. what you think you’re doing) and understand why the ball is going where it’s going.

All this, without having to videotape yourself or bothering someone else to do it.

It’s unprecedented insight for playing better golf (and having more fun).

What’s Different about the 3Bays GSA…

As I mentioned, there are a lot of these analyzers on the market. Some are quite good.

The 3Bays GSA is the only golf swing analyzer that attaches to the butt of the club.

The biggest difference about 3Bays — and one reason I really like it — is the way it attaches to your club.

It’s the only analyzer that goes in the butt end of your grip where it’s totally out of the way and out of sight.

What’s less obvious is, at only a third of an ounce, it’s “the world’s lightest” golf swing analyzer, too.

Bottom line: You don’t see it or feel it, but it’s working.

Most Importantly, It’s Extremely Accurate

Of course, it doesn’t matter how lightweight or affordable a swing analzyer is; if it isn’t accurate, it’s worthless.

That’s why I gave the 3Bays a real workout before writing this.

First, I took about two dozen swings with it.

So far, so good: the 3Bays easily identified and showed me what pros, simulators, and expensive launch monitors have told me before.

Namely, that my swing plane “comes over the top” and I sometimes open the clubface at impact.

Then, I made a dozen more bad swings — this time on purpose (ha, ha).

3Bays picked up and mapped those, too, even the subtle changes I made to clubhead speed, path, face angle, etc. Very impressive.

Finally, I put the 3Bays to what is probably an unfair test — comparing its accuracy against Trackman.

Trackman, as you may know, is considred the gold standard of launch monitors.

It also costs about 20,000 bucks.

But my results were similar to what you’ll find in video reviews all over the Web:

3Bays usually differs from Trackman by only a couple yards (when measuring carry distance) or miles-per-hour (when measuring clubhead and ball speed).

My conclusion? 3Bays is like getting $20,000 technology for less than $200.

And, it Works Easily with iPhone and Android

Speaking of technology, I hate when things designed to make life simpler do exactly the opposite.

Drives…me…nuts.

So, I have to give major points to 3Bays for making this easy to set up and use.

You simply pop it onto your club, download the free app, and you’re ready to swing.

I think it took me all of three minutes.

What Other Reviewers Are Saying…

I really put the 3Bays through its paces, but I was curious to see if others who used it had similar reactions and conclusions.

Here’s what I found:

“The best money you can spend on golf. Will make you better.”
- Jake V (via Amazon)

“Simple, fast, and accurate answers to remedy any golfers swing issues.”
- Tom Conway, Life Member, PGA Golf Instructor

“An amazing device that gives you accurate, real time feedback
- Nick Bradley, PGA Tour Instructor

“This could be the best teaching aid ever invented”
- Debby King, former LPGA Coach of the Year

“This thing is a gem. I made a 14-point improvement in 6 months.”
- DaggerSA (via TheSandtrap)

“One of the best teaching aids since the invention of video
- David Emerick, Golf Digest Top-50 Teacher (California)

“One could conceivably track every swing in a real round of golf without slowing down the foursome.”
- Links Magazine

“Saved me a few lessons with a pro, which makes this pay for itself.”
- J. Solomon (via Amazon)

Plus, You Get Support After the Sale

You know from my other reviews that I’m big on this.

As easy as it is to set up and use the 3Bays GSA, you may have questions.

Not to worry.

3Bays has many sources of help including a toll-free customer service phone line manned by actual human beings.

(Yes, I called it and the guy on the other end knew the product inside and out.)

On its website, 3Bays also provides:

- Detailed answers to frequently-asked-questions, complete with helpful screenshots

- Downloadable user manuals and quick-start guides

- An email addresses for sales and service questions

On top of all this, you have the safety net of a one-year warranty.

If there’s something wrong with the unit, 3Bays will repair or replace it with a brand new one.

Where to Buy for the Best Price and Free Shipping

I’ve scoured the Web and the absolute best price I’ve found on the 3Bays GSA is $199.

Many sellers (including 3Bays itself), will also charge you an additional 15 dollars or more for shipping.

However, you can get the best price and free shipping in the USA if you order from Revolution Golf.

Most weeks, the courses you see during the PGA Tour telecast are private. But not this week. Anyone can play the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, host site of the Players Championship, and we just love that.

Many of you must love it, too, because, for the last few years on the Monday after the Players Championship, and for weeks thereafter, we get flooded with questions about playing TPC Sawgrass on a Florida golf vacation.

This year, I thought I'd try to answer some of your questions in advance given that the editors of Golf Odyssey played TPC Sawgrass just 90 days ago.

The 17th hole is often the highlight of rounds at TPC Sawgrass and Florida golf vacations.

Unlike some of the private TPC golf courses played on tour, anyone can play the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass…and we just love that.

Many of you must love it, too, because, for the last few years after the Players Championship, we get flooded with questions about playing at TPC Sawgrass.

This year, we’re being proactive: here are the answers to some frequenty asked questions and a few insider tips you need to know if you’d like to play one of the best, most famous, and most recognizable golf courses in the world:

(If you’d like my full review and all my insider tips on visiting TPC Sawgrass, you can get them now in the free guide below.)

1. Is it possible to play TPC Sawgrass at a discount? Yes, the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is expensive. But you can often play it for less than the $410 high-season (March-June) green fee if you take advantage of specials and discounts that are often made available.

A couple winters ago, for instance, we alerted you to one of the most amazing deals we have ever seen (before it was officially made public, I might add).

Whereas a round on the Players Stadium Course alone can cost $410, the package we uncovered included three rounds of golf (one on the Players Stadium Course) and three night’s lodging for $387 per person, double occupancy.

Now, we’re not sure if this deal will ever be offered again, and prices have crept back up lately (another reason to play sooner than later), but it’s not a bad idea to monitor the TPC website (tpc.com/sawgrass), Twitter feed (@tpcsawgrass) or Sawgass Marriott website (sawgrassmarriott.com) which are often updated with enticing packages.

2. When is the best time to play TPC Sawgrass? It depends if you want the course’s full fury or not. If you take your Florida golf vacation in the winter months, for example, the rough is still largely dormant and the course is more playable. By contrast, playing in spring just before or after the Players Championship is for sadists who favor U.S. Open-style rough.

Keep in mind, the course will be closed after the tournament until May 15, then from June 17 to July 5 and again from July 29 to August 2 for aerification/maintenance.

3. Is the service commensurate with the price? TPC Sawgrass is not one of those high-profile places that charges you a lot of money, then makes you feel unworthy to be there. The golf staff is particularly friendly and service-minded.

One day, for example, our group woke up to severe rain. Rather than having us wait around the pro shop indefinitely, an enterprising pro shop attendant took my cell phone number, sent us off to breakfast, and called me after he was able to sort out the revised tee sheet.

4. Should I take a cart or caddie? The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is a very walkable course, and I recommend doing so if at all possible.

What makes it a difficult decision for some people is that there’s no extra charge for a cart; it’s included with your green fee.

If you decide to ride, a forecaddie for your group will be assigned, too (suggested gratuity: $20 per player), but take note: you can opt out of this latter service. Few people realize this.

The other option is a caddie. Double and single bag-toting caddies cost $100 and $130, respectively, plus tip.

There’s another — very clever — option I read about in Golf Odyssey that’s detailed in the free guide below. It combines the best of both worlds and costs less than taking caddies.

5. Should I stay at the Sawgrass Marriott? While you’re no longer required to stay at the Sawgrass Marriott to play at TPC Sawgrass, here’s why you might want to do it anyway.

First of all, The Sawgrass Marriott, which formerly seemed less like a golf resort and more like a golfer’s dorm, is much improved following its recent renovation.

Second, while anyone can make reservations at TPC Sawgrass within 14 days of their desired date of play, guests of the Sawgrass Marriott can book much farther in advance.

Third, because the Sawgrass Marriott is affiliated with the TPC Sawgrass, it can offer excellent golf packages (see tip #1).

6. Any recommendations on where to eat? The new clubhouse at TPC Sawgrass is spectacular and some think its food and happy hour specials are great. “Off campus,” (but just across the street) try the Aqua Grill. It has great menus in its lively, fun bar and its well-serviced retaurant, which usually includes the oversight of its owner. If you have a craving for pizza, Al’s is your best bet in Ponte Vedra Beach. It spins out New York-style and gourmet pies.

7. What’s the best way to travel to TPC Sawgrass? If you’re flying in, aim for Jacksonvile International Airport (code: JAX), about 40 minutes from TPC Sawgrass. For any Chicago-based readers out there, American Airlines recently added three, non-stop, daily flights between O’Hare and JAX.

The full list of places from which you can fly non-stop to Jacksonville is in the guide below.

There are a ton of deals and discounts out there.

On the other hand, keeping up with them is like drinking from a fire hose.

Then, trying to separate the wheat from the chaff is like, well, separating wheat all day.

Well, you’re in luck, because today I’ve done the sorting for you.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been paying special attention to those travel “deals” sites like Jetsetter, Vacationist, Sniqueaway, Groupon Getaways and LivingSocial Escapes.

Here’s what I learned: There are some excellent golf trips hiding among their general travel offerings.

And by “excellent,” I mean meaningful discounts at quality properties (hotel and golf).

Some of the packages even include golf (see below), but even when they don’t, saving 40-65 percent — which these sites often deliver — can feel like the same thing.

For example, here are some of the better sales I found at properties with golf onsite or nearby:

LuxuryLink
-La Quinta Resort & Club, La Quinta, California
-Three-night package for two in a deluxe casita with one day of unlimited golf: $652 (regularly $1,481), a 55 percent discount
-Golf onsite and nearby: the unlimited golf can be played on the resort’s Pete Dye Mountain Course, Pete Dye Dunes Course, PGA West’s Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course, PGA West’s Greg Norman Course and there are plenty more layouts nearby

Groupon Getaways
-Puntacana Hotel at the Puntacana Resort & Club, Dominican Republic
-3-night stay for two including “resort enhancements” from $489 (regularly $1,023), a 52 percent discount. (Resort enhancements include daily breakfast, lunch, unlimited drinks and more.)
-Golf onsite: the Tom Fazio-designed Corales and the P.B. Dye-designed La Cana

Jetsetter
-Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Carlsbad, California
-From $195 per night (regularly $275 per night), a 29 percent discount
-Golf onsite: The only San Diego golf course designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay is actually one of their best. Plenty of other golf nearby in what is the golf equipment capital of America.

LivingSocial Escapes
-Sonesta Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
-Two nights and two rounds of golf at the Heritage Collection courses plus a $100 food-and-beverage credit from $399 (regularly $820), a 52 percent discount
-Golf nearby: The Heritage Collection includes Palmetto Hall Plantation, Oyster Reef GC, Port Royal GC, and Shipyard GC. Tons of other golf, too, in this generally more upscale alternative to Myrtle Beach.

These examples just scratch the surface — I get offers from a ton of other sources, including from the courses and resorts themselves.

In fact, I’ve been thinking about doing something with all this info, something I think you’ll find useful and helpful.

Is a list of the best golf travel deals and packages I’ve found something you’d like to receive, say, once or twice per month?

If so, click here and leave a comment.

Today’s tip is short, but very sweet.

In fact, if you have upcoming travel plans, don’t make another move until you read this:

The luxury hotel collection The Leading Hotels of the World has doubled — yes, doubled — the amount of complimentary golf in its “Leading Stay and Play” package.

This means you can now play two rounds of free golf at dozens of their top-shelf properties around the world including…

* The Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa in Scotland
* The Biltmore in Florida (photo above)
* Casa De Campo in the Dominican Republic
* Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort in Ireland
* Hotel Madeline in Colorado
* The Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland
* Sandy Lane in Barbados
* Killarney Park Hotel in Ireland
* The Grove in England
* CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa in Anguilla (photo below)
* Hotel Quinta do Lago in Portugal
* Palazzo Arzaga Spa & Golf Resort in Italy
* Secrets Marquis Los Cabos in Mexico
* Fancourt in South Africa
* Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort in France
* Villa d’Este in Italy
* Grand Velas Riviera Maya in Mexico

Anguilla’s CuisinArt resort also participates in this complimentary golf package.

I just did the math, and if you were to pay out of pocket for two rounds at some of the above properties, it would cost you up to $500-$600.

But now this golf is included — plus daily breakfast — when you book a three-night “Leading Stay and Play” package.

By the way, none of this is totally “out there” yet.

I only found out about it because my contact at The Leading Hotels of the World tipped me off that they were revamping and relaunching this package.

She also told me that some properties are only requiring a two-night stay

You can see the full list of courses and resorts here.

…or call 1-877-885-2512.

p.s. If you find something you want to book, consider first joining LHW’s rewards program called Leaders Club. Normally, members earn a free night at any LHW property after every five qualifying stays, but as a GVI reader, you’ll earn your free night after just four stays. Learn more here.

I’m not surprised; there are a ton of choices and equal amounts of confusion out there.

I wish there was a secret name to reveal here, but one of the best all-around golf GPS and game tracking apps I’ve found is probably one you’ve already heard of:

GolfLogix.

And if the ratings in the major app stores are any indication, millions agree with me.

Here’s the deal: most of the well-known GPS apps are pretty accurate when it comes to basic distance measuring (they’re using the same satellites after all).

It’s everything else that sets them apart.

So, while I’ve downloaded lots of these apps, here’s why I use GolfLogix:

1. Remarkable Suite of Features

There’s too much to list, but here’s what I like best…

• Unlike other apps that use fuzzy aerial satellite photos, GolfLogix gives you crisp, full-color digital images of each hole. We’re talking yardage-book quality stuff.

• On a single screen, you can see distances to the front, center, and back of the greens; distances to hazards, over hazards; and distances to key layups (the 150-, 125-, and 100-yard markers).

• With its patented technology that tracks every shot, GolfLogix lets you learn your true club distances and shot trends. Plus — I really love this one — you get aerial views showing the likely landing zones of your clubs in relation to hazards, bunkers and such.

• You can touch the screen and get distances to any point on the green or layup distances to any point in the fairway — there’s no guessing and no math.

• The scorekeeping and post-round analysis can be as basic or detailed as you want: just the top-level numbers or ultra-granular, pro-level insight. You can also do multi-player scoring and scorecards, too.

• And of course, you can track your handicap and store your rounds, scores and stats.

2. It’s Easy and Intuitive to Use

Of course, all the cool features above wouldn’t mean much if you couldn’t easily find and use them.

So, whenever I’m evaluating stuff like this, I also employ the world’s best testers to gauge intuitive design and user-friendliness: my 70-year-old parents.

In this case, I handed them my phone and asked them to perform a few tasks, like setting up a four-person scorecard and setting exact pin positions.

They were deliberate at first, but they totally got it. And after a few minutes, they were showing me how to do stuff.

Kudos to GolfLogix for making their app…logical.

3. It Works Flawlessly and Reliably

Some apps are slow. Some are buggy. Some lock-up or crash your phone altogether. I’ve never had this problem with GolfLogix.

The guys behind it are not recent college grads who decided to create an app on a whim.

In fact, GolfLogix introduced hand-held GPS technology to the golf market 14 years ago and has drawn on all that experience to perfect their app. It shows.

4. It Has Maps for Every Course You’d Want to Play

The best golf GPS app in the world is useless if it hasn’t mapped the courses you want to play.

Some apps claim to have 10,000 courses mapped. Some claim 15,000.

GolfLogix has more than 32,000 courses mapped.

Bottom line: if you want to play it, you can pretty much count on Golf Logix having mapped it.

5. There’s Support if You Need It

As easy as it is to download and use GolfLogix, you may have questions.

Well, with most apps, it’s, “good bye and good luck.”

Not here. Even with the free version of GolfLogix, you get your choice of:

• Live, toll-free telephone support (yes, from real human beings)

• Helpful videos on how to use GolfLogix features (and stuff like transferring your membership to a new phone)

• Responsive, email support and an online “Help Center” with answers to frequently asked questions

With the “Champion” membership, you get all this, too, plus the great features I mentioned above, and many more I couldn’t cover here.

Frankly, I think it’s the best $20 you can spend on golf.

That said, the best way to familiarize yourself with GolfLogix is probably to start with the no-cost, “Club” version.

This year, Adam Scott drained an amazing putt to win a nail-biting playoff.

The Masters always seems to produce this kind of drama, and if you want to experience it in person, keep reading.

That’s because I’ve arranged a $400 discount on the Masters trip of a lifetime.

(By the way, flights to Atlanta are abundant and inexspensive right now.)

More accurately, this is the Masters “golf vacation” of a lifetime, because it includes:

* VIP access to the *final round* of the Masters
* Police escort to Augusta National
* 3 nights of Ritz-Carlton accommodations
* 2 rounds of award-wining golf (with carts) at Reynolds Plantation
* Private coach transfers
* Keepsake Masters golf chair
* On-site hosts to attend to your every need

Here’s the private offer for GVI Readers:

Public Price: $5,595
GVI Discount: -$400
GVI Reader Price: $5,195

Email me today (editor at golfvacationinsider.com) to lock in the discount, which expires May 17. There is no booking obligation.

Yes, it’s first class all the way, with every detail carefully taken care of by the renown travel specialists at Horizon & Co. (your on-site hosts) …all for an unbelievable price.

Before we get to that, here’s a quick trip itinerary:

Saturday, April 12 (Arrive and unwind):
Fly into Atlanta and make your way to the Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead, which offers (and is convenient to) some of the area’s best restaurants. You’ll meet your Horizon & Co. guide at check-in, then spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Sunday, April 13 (Attend the Masters):
You’ll enjoy a private coach transfer to the Masters, including a police escort through the traffic in Augusta right to the gates of Augusta National.

Here, you’ll step into Horizon & Co.’s private hospitality center (a classic, southern-style mansion) for a brief orientation and to receive two of the most coveted items in all of sports: your Augusta National Patron’s Badge and your commemorative Masters golf chair.

Then, enjoy the Masters. You can follow your favorite players across the grounds of Augusta National or let the action come to you while relaxing in your new chair. And of course, whenever you feel like it, you can escape the crowd and partake of the impressive spread at Horizon & Co’s constantly changing hospitality buffet.

Following the “green jacket” presentation ceremony (and perhaps one last visit to the hospitality buffet), you’ll board Horizon’s coach for the swift transfer to the posh Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation.

Monday, April 14 (Play golf):
The first part of the day is at your leisure. Want to sleep in or enjoy the spa and other amenities at Reynolds Plantation? It’s totally up to you. After lunch, you can tee it up a any one of the resort’s six courses (Great Waters is pictured at right). The evening is also at your leisure, with plenty of resort dining options.

Tuesday, April 15 (Play golf, depart):
Set out for your second round on one of the Reynolds Plantation courses. After your game, enjoy a snack and board the coach for your transfer to Atlanta airport (in time for flights leaving at 6:30 pm onwards.

Email me ( editor [at] golfvacationinsider [dot] com ) today to get:

Sounds like an amazing trip, right?

Ben Steed, a business owner from Texas, experienced it firsthand.

Ben lives in a golf community and has taken dozens of golf trips over the 20-years he has been playing the game.

Here’s part of an email he sent to a friend when he got back:

“Our trip began by meeting the Horizon & Co. staff in Atlanta at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, a beautiful hotel and very well equipped to handle our group. From here on, I never handled my bag. It was just always where I wanted it to be and needed it to be. Perfect! The next few days were filled with class, excitement, police escorts, and first class accommodations. I can honestly say, not even a single thing was left out. You will not find a more honest, sincere, helpful, classy, humorous, accommodating, and warm group of people to travel with and take care of your every wish and whim. I would not consider going any other way for a golf trip of a lifetime. Absolutely amazing. Something I will never
forget.”

Horizon & Co., Masters of the Masters Vacation

If you’re not already familiar with them, Horizon & Co. is a Virtuoso accredited travel supplier that has been crafting unique travel experiences for discerning travelers since 1963.

And, the company recently joined forces with Kensington Tours, itself named one of Travel + Leisure’s “Best Luxury Adventure Companies” and National Geographic Adventure’s “Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth.”

Here are some of their beliefs about doing business and taking care of customers, which, frankly, sound a lot like our own:

Trust is the hardest thing to earn and the easiest thing to lose
True luxury is knowing the difference between the best and the most expensive
Making savvy choices is more difficult than following the herd
We believe in saying what we mean and standing behind our word
Exceptional service is about anticipating needs rather than responding to problems

In addition to Ben’s glowing letter above, I thought you might like to hear from other Horizon & Co. customers:

“So again Horizon, you have come through for us when we needed you, and we are very grateful. This of course makes me wonder, ‘Why in the world doesn’t everyone travel with Horizon?’” - W. Almonte

“We would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending you guys to family and friends (in fact we’ve already started), and would love to go somewhere again with Horizon & Co.” - R. Ware

Horizon & Co. has established such a strong reputation that even other travel agents rely on them. Here’s what some of them have said:

“My first booking with Horizon was straight off the web site. I was happy, my clients were dazzled, and I have never stopped thanking Horizon for making me a star.”
- Diane E., Virtuoso Travel Specialist

“I honestly think you are the finest company in the world. You have gone above, beyond, and into the stratosphere for my clients.”
- Jeri P., Sherman Oaks, Calif.

Email me ( editor [at] golfvacationinsider [dot] com ) today to get:
(1) A free, no-risk Masters vacation consultation with Horizon & Co.
(2) Savings of $400 if you decide to book the trip (discount expires May 17)

The Unadvertised Offer for GVI Readers Only

Ok, here’s the best part of today’s email, the special offer that Horizon & Co. is willing to extend to Golf Vacation Insider readers.

This trip is listed at $5,595 on Horizon & Co’s website, with an early booking discount of $300 per person.

However, Horizon is offering a $400 per person early booking discount to GVI Readers, bringing the trip cost down to $5,195.

That’s still a good deal of money, to be sure, But here’s why I said earlier that it’s an “unbelievably good price.”

Most Masters trips are exactly that – trips only to see the Masters.

These trips still cost thousands of dollars, but they don’t include two rounds of top-notch golf (including carts); they don’t include a police escort and VIP hospitality on site; they don’t include a commemorative Masters chair; and instead of the Ritz-Carlton, they put you up in the Hampton or Holiday Inn.

Go ahead and check around. You’ll see what I mean.

Want to Learn More or Book this Trip? Here’s Exactly What to Do

If you want to take this trip, or simply want to learn more about it, here’s what to do:

Email me ( editor [at ]golfvacationinsider [dot] com ) today with your name, phone number and how you’d like to be contacted. Your message will come directly to me.

(By doing this, you’ll lock in the special package and price if you decide to book the trip. Of course, there’s no obligation to do so.)

I’ll then have Karen MacBeath at Horizon & Co. contact you — she’ll be delighted to answer any questions you have.

Remember, you must reply to me and book by May 17 to be eligible for the special price.

There is no cost to speak to Karen and certainly no obligation or pressure to take this trip (it’s just not Horizon & Co.’s style), but if the customer testimonials on this page are any indication, you’ll likely have the time of your life.

Email me ( editor [at] golfvacationinsider [dot] com ) today to get:
(1) A free, no-risk Masters vacation consultation with Horizon & Co.
(2) Savings of $400 if you decide to book the trip (discount expires May 17)

Save your receipts, my friends.

With them and the tips below, you’ll be able to write off 50 percent (and, in some cases, 100 percent) of the golf you play at home and while traveling.

Unlike in Canada (sorry, guys), golf in America is tax deductible if certain conditions are met.

Basically, you have to play in connection with business activities, but that’s pretty easy to pull off.

Here are some examples — all perfectly legal — and the details below to prove it.

Local Golf
Do you have “substantial business discussions” with prospects, clients, customers, or employees in person, over the phone, or by email that you could instead conduct at a golf course?

If so, you can deduct 50 percent of what you spend on golf and meals (plus the roundtrip mileage) as long as (1) you conduct your business discussion before or after you play and (2) you conduct it in a business setting, such as a quiet and preferably private space inside the clubhouse.

Oh, and get this: while it’s the classier move, you’re not even required to “treat.” Even if you split the day’s total bill, the portion you paid is deductible.

Golf Trips
This can get more complicated (with respect to domestic vs. foreign travel, weekends, etc.) but the basic idea is the same:

If you can demonstrate a trip (or a portion of a trip) was taken for the “pursuit of business” you can deduct your costs of getting to and from the destination and any business-related expenses you incur at the destination.

There’s no rule that says all important business meetings must take place locally. Take advantage of this.

Golf Lessons
You may want to run this one by a few accountants, but I’ve heard of people successfully deducting their golf lessons.

It’s actually not as crazy as it sounds.

If you’re someone who regularly uses golf to entertain customers or to prospect for clients, you could argue that improving your game improves your business.

This may be by helping you get an audience with new or key prospects, or, if you’re a hacker, helping to be taken seriously.

Just remember: since golf lessons benefit you personally, too, you’ll need to allocate your lesson costs according to how much you play for business vs. pleasure.

Golf Outings
So far, I’ve told you about golf expenses that are subject to a 50 percent tax deduction (that is, you can deduct half the cost). But here’s how to write off 100 percent:

Play in a charity event or outing.

If the net proceeds of a volunteer-run event go to a qualified charity, you can deduct the entire cost of attending: golf, meals, etc.

You can do the same at most tour events if you attend them in connection with a legitimate business meeting/discussion.

If the tournament’s net proceeds go to charity (most PGA Tour events do), and most of the work is done by volunteers, that qualifies the event for the 100 percent deduction: tickets, meals, parking, etc.

Now, this goes without saying, but I’m going to say it:

I am not a tax expert and none of this should be considered tax advice.

There are a few other important (but not impossible) conditions that must be met in order for any travel and entertainment — including golf — to be tax deductible.

Consult an accountant and/or IRS Publication 463 before you deduct anything.

With that said, do you have any experience deducting golf and/or travel? If not, are you now more likely to consider it? Any questions about it?

Please share your thoughts or read what others are saying below.
