Bayonet and Blackhorse (above) are top value courses to play on a Pebble Beach golf vacation.

Yesterday, we spread a little holiday cheer by sharing the secret of how you can play “the big three” Pebble Beach golf courses at up to 50 percent off their published green fees and, more importantly, without enduring the expensive hotels stays normally required to make advance tee times.

Today, we’re following up on that theme to let you know about two more golf courses — reopening tomorrow — that happen to offer some of the better values for Pebble Beach golf vacations.

Golf Odyssey readers first learned about the pending re-opening Bayonet and Blackhorse golf courses (www.bayonetblackhorse.com) back in the June 2008 issue, as they were included in the editors’ recommendations for “Carmel-Monterey alternatives to Pebble Beach.”

During their visit, only nine holes of each 18-hole course were open, but as of tomorrow, all 36 will be in play for Pebble Beach golf vacations.

Here’s what Golf Odyssey said about the two courses: “For excellent bang for your buck at another tour-quality venue, play a round at the Bayonet and Blackhorse facility in Seaside. Even before a blade of grass was touched for the current renovations, both courses were really good and tough. Now, some of the holes have been rerouted, bunkers have been updated, and the green complexes strengthened. Finally, thanks to the removal of overgrown trees and brush, almost every hole looks out on Monterey Bay.”

Green fees range from $75-$115 Monday-Thursday, and $95-$160 Friday-Sunday and holidays. No, that’s not what one would consider “cheap,” but not much is in this neighborhood. More importantly, when you consider the quality of these courses, and that some of their nearby neighbors command more than twice or even three times as much, it’s easy to see why Golf Odyssey thinks they are among the best values you’ll find on a Pebble Beach golf vacation.

Played Bayonet yesterday. It is even better than the great course it was. I consider these to be some of the most high “value” courses around. I enjoy this more than Spanish Bay. In fact, I just got back from Sawgrass, and would say with a straight face I enjoyed by Bayonet round just as much. Don’t miss these courses.

I enjoy reading your articles and have a question. I am looking forward to getting out of St Louis and spending the month of February in Palm Desert, CA. We are members of Signature Gold which gives us 1 time playing privledges at 3 private clubs during our stay. Do you have any other suggestions for reduced fee’s at some of the local upscale courses? I have purchases a 1 month CC membership at Woodhaven, where we are staying. Thank you, Sid Trojahn

Hi Sid, sorry for the late reply. Given the weak economy, virtually the entire world of golf is on sale. There are so many golf deals and specials avaialble now, there are too many to list. My advice would be to decide which courses you’d like to play and then call directly for the latest offers — sometimes, the best deals don’t make it to their websites right away, if at all.
