New Project in Oregon to “Rival” Bandon Dunes Golf Resort

bandon-dunes-golf-crook-point-resortWhile the golf world is atwitter about next summer’s opening of Old MacDonald, the fourth course at Oregon’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, there’s a new, $20 million golf resort being developed a mere hour down the coast that’s starting to get some attention, too.

It’s called the Crook Point Resort, and, in addition to oceanfront accommodations and upscale dining, it calls for a spa, an equestrian center, and a fly fishing lake — on-site amenities that Bandon Dunes Golf Resort doesn’t offer.

But here’s the real news: it will have an 18-hole, Dye-designed golf course hugging the shoreline like those at Bandon Dunes — but playable for half the price.

According to an article in the county newspaper, the Curry Coastal Pilot, “Although the 200-acre resort would rival Bandon Dunes, it would be aimed at a clientele different from the…groups that travel to Bandon for two or three days of golf…”

Instead, Crook Point Resort aims to be more family oriented, where golf will be but one of the main activities along with fishing, hiking, biking, boating, horseback riding, and spa-going. Another cool twist: guests will be issued golf carts upon arrival; cars won’t be permitted on the grounds. Granted, Bandon Dunes offers its share of off-course activities as well.

The golf course itself will have Perry Dye’s name on it, not Pete’s, which should help keep the green fee “down” around $115, including a cart. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort guests pay $220 in high season to walk.

Members of the Crook family, who have reportedly lived in southern Oregon’s Curry County since the late 1800s, expect their resort be completed by summer 2011, but there are sill many approvals to obtain. Back in May, the county had not yet changed its policy to even allow destination resorts.

“It will be a long process with several public hearings,” said county planning director David Pratt at the time.

So, for the time being, it looks like we’ll have to “settle” for the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, which my colleagues at Golf Odyssey called, “the single best place in the world to play golf.” And this was before Old MacDonald was on the drawing board.

Having been to Bandon twice with my son, can’t wait to go back to play the two new ones. I don’t think Bandon will suffer from competition. In fact, they may even get more play as families might go out to the area

Agreed, Bruce. And let’s not forget the course at Bandon Crossings. This entire area (not just the Bandon Dunes Resort) may become a true golf destination soon.

20 years ago Mr. Keiser recognized the unrealized potential for world class golf on the south Oregon coast. His over-riding motivation was and has remained his passionate committment to furthering the game.– Leaving it better than he found it. He has done his part and set a standard for others to follow. We’ll see if they do.
