Free Bandon Dunes Golf Vacation Guide

With four, 18-hole courses all ranked among the top-30 in the USA, nowhere in the country will you find a larger collection of highly ranked golf courses than at Oregon’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (and owner Mike Keiser isn’t finished yet!). Still, the relatively new and very remote resort remains a mystery even for some seasoned golf travelers. Is it really as good as everyone says? Are there Bandon Dunes golf packages available? What’s the weather like out there? What’s the best way to get there? We answered all these questions and more — including the differences between the golf courses in the architects’ own words — in the FREE guide below.

Bandon Preserve
After Bandon Preserve (above), resort owner Mike Keiser may bring Bandon Muni Golf Links to the Southern Oregon coast.

I’m breaking one of my rules today to tell you about a new project by Bandon Dunes Golf Resort owner Mike Keiser (no, it’s not Bandon Preserve, scheduled to open in 2012).

See, I normally don’t comment on “planned” golf projects.

So many things have to go right for a new course or resort to open (and stay open) that I’d rather not deal in speculation.

Why am I making an exception today?

For one thing, it’s the exciting plan: Keiser wants to create a St. Andrews-type setup near his Southern Oregon resort that already boasts four courses ranked in the top-100.

More importantly, it’s the man: Keiser has proven he knows how to get things done. Read more →

Bandon Dunes golf packages are a little different than at other golf resorts. Here's what you need to know.

Oregon’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort delightfully marches to its own beat, and this includes how it views and handles golf packages. Here’s what you need to know:

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort's Old Macdonald course has created a rankings situation we've never seen before. (Photo by Wood Sabold)

The golf course rankings game just got a lot more interesting.

Old Macdonald, the fourth course at Oregon’s remote, but wildly successful, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort has debuted very high on various magazines’ lists of “best courses.”

Not only has this rejiggered the rankings of other top courses in the country, it affected the rankings of Old Macdonald’s sister courses at the same resort.

What’s wilder is that it has created a situation we’ve never seen before… Read more →

Checking Bandon Dunes weather for an upcoming trip or to help you plan one? We’ve got you covered.

First, if you’re heading out there soon, check out the current conditions and five-day Bandon Dunes weather forecast below:

But keep in mind, the best way I know how to describe Bandon Dunes weather is, “predictably unpredictable.”

The weather out here can change, and change back, hour by hour. So, this is one of those places where it’s best to plan for swings in temperature and precipitation.

Old Macdonald, the most highly anticipated golf course in America, is scheduled to open on June 1 at southern Oregon’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Based upon how much as been written about Old Macdonald, you probably already knew this, and the concept behind the course, i.e., that it’s an homage to “Golden Age” architect C.B. Macdonald.

But I recently read an exclusive interview that the editors of Golf Odyssey conducted with Bandon Dunes Golf Resort owner Mike Keiser, and he revealed a few things about the course (and the new course he’s planning) I haven’t seen published anywhere else.  Read more →

bandon-dunes-golf-crook-point-resortWhile the golf world is atwitter about next summer’s opening of Old MacDonald, the fourth course at Oregon’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, there’s a new, $20 million golf resort being developed a mere hour down the coast that’s starting to get some attention, too.

It’s called the Crook Point Resort, and, in addition to oceanfront accommodations and upscale dining, it calls for a spa, an equestrian center, and a fly fishing lake — on-site amenities that Bandon Dunes Golf Resort doesn’t offer.

But here’s the real news: it will have an 18-hole, Dye-designed golf course hugging the shoreline like those at Bandon Dunes — but playable for half the price.   Read more →

If you’ve been toying with the idea of taking a Bandon Dunes Golf Vacation, do yourself a favor and make your reservations sooner rather than later.

Why? Because Golf in the Kingdom recently finished filming there, and when the movie comes out next year, every golfer not already familiar with Bandon Dunes is going to see what we’ve been saying for years: that the only thing keeping these three (soon to be four) courses from being authentic Irish/Scottish links is that they’re located in a little town on the southern coast of Oregon. There were three main reactions to last week’s post about Bandon Dunes Golf Resort’s Old Macdonald course opening for 10-hole preview play.

One was frustration, because I left out the part about the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort being located in Oregon (sorry, I forget that not everyone knows this).

One was gratitude, for researching tee times, green/caddie fees, and which 10 holes (and their order) will make up the preview rounds (all largely left out of mainstream reportage).

But by far, the most replies I received concerned the simple request for more photos of what is arguably the most highly anticipated golf course in the United States.

You’re in luck.  Read more →
