Torrey Pines Golf Course (South) is a former U.S. Open venue and annual PGA Tour Stop. Here's how to play it for less than half of its regular rates.
The PGA Tour is playing at San Diego’s Torrey Pines this week, and once again, my friends at Golf Odyssey have the lowdown on playing this former U.S. Open venue and usually crowded municipal complex.
By “lowdown,” I mean the smart way to score a tee time at what is often called “Bethpage West,” and how to save a ton of money in the process.
Consider this: a traveling golfer who books an advance tee time on Torrey Pines’ South Course will have to pay an eye-popping $300 in fees (Bethpage Black is “only” $150 for nonresidents).
That’s a lot to pay for any U.S. Open course, let alone a muni.
Thankfully, there’s an easy and surprisingly convenient way to play Torrey Pines for more than half that much. Read more →
Depending where you live, you may never have heard of the CordeValle golf resort.
It only has 45 rooms, but the hard-to-please editors of Golf Odyssey recognized it as one of the “Best US Golf Resorts for Awesome Accommodations” and one of America’s “Most Romantic Retreats with On-site Golf” in their annual awards.
This on-site golf course — where the PGA Tour is playing this week — is a fixture among the top-100, and you can play it and a top-50 course it teamed up with as part of this noteworthy package. Read more →
Do you see opportunity or an obstacle? Your answer will influence your game.
Did you hear PGA Tour player Ryan Moore publicly blast the US Open and Pebble Beach?
How about the quotes from Gregory Havret, who barely made it into the field and then finished just one stroke behind the winner?
I think these statements say a lot about their personalities, which, in turn, had a big effect on their performance.
Here’s what each of them said, how you can tell which type of player you are, and if your “golf personality” is helping or hurting your game and your enjoyment of golf vacations. Read more →
You can get a tour-caliber test on your San Diego golf vacation at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Want to play this week’s PGA Tour venue exactly the way the world’s best players will experience it on Sunday? If so, plan your next San Diego golf vacation so you’re at Torrey Pines Golf Course on the Monday following its annual Buick Invitational.
Few people outside of San Diego know that, immediately after the conclusion of the tournament, Torrey Pines Golf Course holds a lottery for the next day’s tee times. The lucky golfers selected not only get to play the South Course under championship conditions, they can play from the Championship tees and with Sunday pin placements. If there was ever a way to truly know the challenging set-ups that tour players contend with, this is it. Read more →
Torrey's serene scene will change come open time.
Add one more to the already long list of good reasons to take a San Diego golf vacation: the opportunity to score tickets to the 2008 U.S Open at Torrey Pines before they go on sale to the general public.
The USGA recently announced that it will give its members the opportunity to buy week-long “grounds” and “Trophy Club” ticket packages in advance of non-members as long as they submit an application by 5 p.m. on April 15, 2007. The Trophy Club option includes access to an on-site, air-conditioned tent with food and beverage service. Read more →
The luxurious but low key Lodge at Torrey Pines.
I don’t know where PGA Tour rookie Brandt Snedeker slept Wednesday night, but judging by his blistering score of 61 in yesterday’s opening round of the Buick Invitational, there’s a good chance it was at the elegantly rustic and restful Lodge at Torrey Pines.
With rooms starting at $335 per night, the Lodge is not cheap, but it’s one of the best places you can stay on a San Diego golf vacation and a monumental improvement over the no-frills travel lodge that previously stood behind the 18th green of Torrey Pines’ South Course. Read more →
Find your way to Lost Canyons for superb golf.
Sixteen of the world’s best golfers tee off tomorrow at Sherwood Country Club near Los Angeles, each trying to cash the bloated $1.35 winner’s check from Tiger Wood’s “silly season” event, the Target World Challenge.
Sherwood is certainly a nice layout, but it’s a private course, and, believe it or not, there are better places the public can play while on a Los Angeles golf vacation. You just need to drive about an hour north from all the hubbub to find them. Read more →
