More Golf Vacation Tips

It may not be easy, but there are ways you can play Fishers Island Club without a member connection.

Q: I have always wanted to play Fishers Island Club, but I don’t know any members.  Do you know how one can play Fishers Island?

A: We know a lot of the secrets to getting on some of the best private golf courses in the world, and yes, Fishers Island Club is no different.

Fishers Island may well be a golf club where getting to the club is as difficult as getting on the course.  Located on a small island at the tip of Long Island Sound, one needs to either fly in a private plane, arrive by boat, or take a short ferry from New London, Connecticut.

Make no mistake about it, the golf course is a Seth Raynor classic.  Last I checked, the Fishers Island Club was rated 17th in Golf Digest bi-annual ranking of the best golf courses in the United States and 24th in Golf Magazine’s list.  Like many of Charles Blair Macdonald’s classic courses, Fishers Island features Raynor’s interpretation of some of the most famous holes in golf — Alps, Short, Redan, Eden, Punchbowl, Biarritz, etc.

Thankfully, there are ways to play Fishers Island (and virtually every other private club) without a member connection.

Does golf need a radical overhaul?

This isn’t necessarily a new question, but it’s one being debated more — and more seriously — coming off the recent PGA Merchandise Show.

Adding fuel to the fire is a group of well-known, influential, and highly skilled players whose recently launched idea is likely making the blue coats at the USGA turn green.

Some think it could save golf from dying a slow death.

One thing’s for sure –  you’ll probably think it’s one of the best or worst ideas you’ve ever heard of. Read more →

We’re normally pretty serious with our posts, but given everything flying around with regard to Tiger Woods and Crashgate, I thought today might be good for a little levity.

I don’t know about you, but given the addition of golf to the 2016 Olympics, I certainly was surprised by the selection of Rio as the host city.  I know it’s just one small factor, but given Chicago’s clear advantage over Rio de Janeiro with respect to championship golf venues, I’ve been wondering just how the latter city was able to secure it’s Olympic bid.  Last I checked, there isn’t even a single course in the entire world top-100 that’s located in South America.  Chicago has a handful.  So, I did a little research.  Read more →
