Bethpage Black Golf Course might be the only muni that comes with a warning label.

Bethpage Black Golf Course, New York’s marvelous muni that hosted the US Open in 2002 and 2009, reopens today for the 2010 season…but with a whopping green fee increase.

Like other states across the USA, New York is struggling to balance its budget and increasing fees at parks (as well as proposing closures and service cutbacks) is one way it’s attempting to fill the gaps.

Still, if your travels take you to, or through, New York this golf season, you owe it to yourself to set up a tee time on the Black.

Normally, this can be as challenging as scoring a table at one of the Big Apple’s top restaurants, but here’s our step-by-step guide that shows exactly what to do and how much the rates have increased this season.  Read more →

You don't need to spend $850 to get on Bethpage Black, Long Island, New York's marvelous muni.

I don’t normally do this, but today I have to call out Golf World magazine for something it did (or didn’t do, rather) in its latest (May 25) issue, which it billed as including a “special report” on how to get on Bethpage Black, site of the upcoming U.S. Open.

I respect Golf World for its tour coverage, so I was interested to see if they knew something about getting on Bethpage Black that we overlooked.  Read more →

Bethpage Black

Follow our advice below to score coveted Bethpage Black tee times (18th hole pictured).

[Updated April 5, 2010 to reflect increased green fees for 2010.]

Several readers have asked what we recommend in terms of how to get on Long Island, New York’s Bethpage Black course, site of the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens.

As you probably know, the U.S. Open was held at Bethpage Black in 2002 and most recently on June 15-21, 2009 , so it’s more popular than ever. And, for out-of-staters, it’s that much tougher to get on because New York residents can make tee times up to seven days in advance; for everyone else, it’s only two days. Keep in mind, too, that the course is closed during winter and on non-holiday Mondays.  Read more →
