Erin Hills' natural beauty, challenge and proximity to Milwaukee may land it a U.S. Open.

There is a fantastic new course to play while you’re on an American Club Kohler Golf Vacation, but it’s not located at the resort.

It’s called Erin Hills Golf Course and you may have recently read about it one of the mainstream golf magazines. Golf Odyssey readers, on the other hand, learned about it a year ago, when we were the first golf publication to feature it at length.  Read more →

The American Club/Kohler has the total package.

If you’re thinking about taking an American Club Kohler Golf Vacation, do yourself a favor and check out one of its many package deals.

Two things are particularly impressive about them. While you wouldn’t mistake them for discount golf vacations, they’ll truly save you a significant amount of money rather than purchasing everything separately. Someone needs to remind other resorts that this is the main idea behind a “package.”  Read more →

How suite it is: Just ask and you may receive.

Want to know the secret to getting a free room upgrade on an American Club Kohler Golf Vacation, or on any other golf vacation for that matter? Ask for it.

True story. A friend of our publisher was recently on an American Club Kohler golf vacation and, for whatever reason, was not satisfied with his room at the normally infallible American Club hotel. When he inquired at the front desk about moving to a different room, he was told there were no other rooms available.

“What if the president of the United States was to show up tonight; would you have a room for him?,” he asked.  Read more →

Meadow Valleys' 14th is a formidable foe.

When playing the Meadow Valleys course at Blackwolf Run on your American Club Kohler Golf Vacation, pay special attention to holes 13 through 15.

On the front nine, you can spray your shots a bit without terrible retribution. While forgiveness can be fun, it is the back nine, however, that is fierce and unforgettable, particularly the aforementioned three-hole stretch.

Thirteen is a great, short par four of 351 yards requiring a blind drive over a hillside and then a partially blind second shot from (hopefully) the fairway up to an elevated — but dead flat — pedestal green.  Read more →

The Irish Course's seventh hole is beset by bunkers.

In America, you don’t often find an individual golf hole with more than a handful of bunkers; having a dozen or more is downright rare. But golfers lucky enough to experience an American Club Kohler Golf Vacation have the unique opportunity to play a hole with twice that amount.

Architect Pete Dye’s ode to bunkers can be found on Wisconsin’s Whistling Straits Irish course, particularly hole number seven, named Troll for the creature that supposedly presides over its greenside creek.  Read more →

Whirlpool tubs are standard inevery American Club room.

There are many resorts that offer in-room spa treatments, but if you want to experience what it’s like to have a spa in your room, take an American Club Kohler Golf Vacation and arrange a stay its namesake hotel.

The Kohler family made a fortune designing and selling plumbing accessories, so it’s fitting that the bathrooms at the American Club are the highlights of its guest rooms.  Read more →

The fighting Irish: beating par here can be a true struggle.

According to their course and slope ratings from the “mere mortal” tees, Whistling Straits’ two courses, Straits and Irish, bear the same level of difficulty.

In our experience, however, those numbers don’t add up. The Irish course is easily the more challenging one to play on an American Club Kohler Golf Vacation.

It’s not that the holes are overly long or tricky. Rather, Pete Dye’s fourth creation at this world-class resort simply eats errant golf balls and it’s the forced carries, gnarly rough, ponds, streams and ravines that set the table. The Straits course, while challenging in its own right, provides a wider margin for error.  Read more →

At Blackwolf Run's River Course, the beauty — and challenge — begins on the first tee.

Clearly, playing Whistling Straits’ two spectacular courses is the No. 1 priority on an American Club Kohler Golf Vacation. But, if you’ve already played them or — gasp! — can’t secure a tee time, Blackwolf Run’s River Course should be your first resort-course alternative.

Of the two Blackwolf Run courses, River and Meadow Valleys, the River Course is the marquee layout.

Designer Pete Dye has admitted that he began his work at Blackwolf Run after gaining an appreciation for the masochistic thrill golfers get from being utterly beaten up by a golf course yet still pulling off a couple of heroic shots during the round.

Dye’s initial 18 holes were so well received, resort owner Herb Kohler brought him back for another 18. Unbeknownst to most, the River Course actually comprises nine of the original holes and nine of the “new” ones.  Read more →
