Those considering golf vacations to play Whistling Straits should also consider staying at the little-known (and private) Riverbend mansion.

If you plan on watching this season’s final major, the PGA Championship, you’re going to see and hear the following:

You’re going to hear endless discussion about whether Tiger or Phil deserves to be No. 1 in the World Golf Ranking.

You’re going to see and hear a lot about bunkers because the Straits Course at Wisconsin’s Whistling Straits Golf Club has more of them than any other course in the world…967 according to Golf Digest.

But what you won’t see or hear talked about is one of the most important secrets to know if you’re planning a golf vacation to play Whistling Straits and the other three courses at Kohler’s American Club.  Read more →

Do you see opportunity or an obstacle? Your answer will influence your game.

Do you see opportunity or an obstacle? Your answer will influence your game.

Did you hear PGA Tour player Ryan Moore publicly blast the US Open and Pebble Beach?

How about the quotes from Gregory Havret, who barely made it into the field and then finished just one stroke behind the winner?

I think these statements say a lot about their personalities, which, in turn, had a big effect on their performance.

Here’s what each of them said, how you can tell which type of player you are, and if your “golf personality” is helping or hurting your game and your enjoyment of golf vacations.   Read more →

Websites like USOpen.com provide plenty of inspiration for watching the tournament...or for planning Pebble Beach golf vacations.

Websites like USOpen.com provide plenty of inspiration for watching the tournament...or for planning Pebble Beach golf vacations.

Is it me, or does it feel like US Open week came out of nowhere this year?

Here in New Jersey, the golf season is just getting started (mainly because it false started a few times) and I haven’t had the chance to mentally gear up for watching, “the toughest test in championship golf,” which this year has the added gravity of being played on one of the greatest golf courses in the world: Pebble Beach Golf Links.

If you’re in the same boat and want to quickly get yourself “US Open ready,” here are two great websites with photos and videos that perfectly position the significance of this year’s tournament: Read more →

Old Macdonald officially opened for Bandon Dunes golf vacations on June 1 (hole 7 pictured). (Photo by Wood Sabold)

Yesterday was the official opening of Old Macdonald, the fourth course at Oregon’s remote, but wildly successful, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

The question on everyone’s mind, of course, is: “Now that it’s officially ready for play, how does Old Macdonald compare to the three existing layouts: Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, and Bandon Trails?”

Thanks to my colleagues at Golf Odyssey, we don’t have to wait to find out.

They were able to arrange a special trip for Golf Odyssey subscribers to play all four courses at Bandon Dunes (plus a private, Q&A session with resort owner Mike Keiser and Old Macdonald co-architect Jim Urbina) three weeks ago.

And I was able to get the initial lowdown from interviews with the editors and a peek at their post-trip survey, the results of which are pretty shocking.  Read more →

The Wilderness at Fortune Bay is just one reason you might want to consider Minnesota golf vacations.

The Wilderness at Fortune Bay (above) and the two courses at Giant's Ridge are three very good reasons to consider Minnesota golf vacations.

We get a lot of phone calls and emails from people asking for, “fresh, new ideas” on where to take golf vacations. So, today, I’m going to share one with you.

It’s likely most of you never considered taking a golf vacation to the destination I’m about to reveal, but this particular American state is extremely golf-oriented.

In fact, it leads the USA in per capita golf participation, and (perhaps not by accident) it’s the only state in which the USGA has held all 14 of its championships, including four US Opens.

More to the point, this state, and a specific region within it, offers a cluster of top-100 golf courses at budget prices, and summer is the perfect time to visit.  Read more →

While the 17th of TPC Sawgrass' Players Stadium Course is the most recognizable, the 11th is a beauty, too.

While the 17th hole of TPC Sawgrass' Players Stadium Course is the most recognizable, its 11th hole is a beauty, too.

The PGA Tour is playing the “fifth major” at TPC Sawgrass this week.

Here’s why you should consider playing it this year.

Number one, if you’ve not yet played the Players Stadium Course there, or haven’t been back since its major renovations, you’re in for some very pleasant surprises.

And, to stir interest in TPC Sawgrass during the sluggish economy, the club’s marketing department has been very busy devising specials and bargain packages.

In February last year, for instance, we took advantage of one of the most amazing deals we have ever seen. Read more →

Bethpage Black Golf Course might be the only muni that comes with a warning label.

Bethpage Black Golf Course might be the only muni that comes with a warning label.

Bethpage Black Golf Course, New York’s marvelous muni that hosted the US Open in 2002 and 2009, reopens today for the 2010 season…but with a whopping green fee increase.

Like other states across the USA, New York is struggling to balance its budget and increasing fees at parks (as well as proposing closures and service cutbacks) is one way it’s attempting to fill the gaps.

Still, if your travels take you to, or through, New York this golf season, you owe it to yourself to set up a tee time on the Black.

Normally, this can be as challenging as scoring a table at one of the Big Apple’s top restaurants, but here’s our step-by-step guide that shows exactly what to do and how much the rates have increased this season.  Read more →

Keep the three tips below in mind and your golf vacation at PGA National Resort & Spa can be a great one.

Keep the three tips below in mind and your golf vacation at PGA National Resort & Spa can be a great one.

If you watched the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic over the weekend, you saw an impressive, wire-to-wire win by Camilo Villegas.

Likewise, you got an eyeful of the picturesque Palm Beach, Fla., venue where he performed it: PGA National Resort & Spa.

Here is what you didn’t see, however, and if you ever select PGA National Resort & Spa for a golf vacation, these things could make or break your trip.  Read more →
